  • Research summary

Parkinson disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s disease. The relationship between clinical phenotype and genotype in patients with PD has been almost exclusively studied in Caucasian populations. This project seeks to contribute to collaborative efforts studying the relationship between clinical phenotype and genotype in PD, but also to provide a substantial contribution to exploring these relationships in non-Caucasian patients, given the high proportion of ethnic minority groups in East London. Additionally, there is an ongoing need for objective biomarkers of PD to both aid in diagnosis, pre-diagnosis (prodromal PD), monitor disease progression, and to help understand the underlying pathogenesis. We believe that using high-throughput lipidomic and proteomic analyses can identify subtle changes in respective lipid or protein/RNA expression in PD patients relative to healthy controls. This project will consider two independent biomarkers, and collect both from the same patient cohort and control cohort.
