Research summary
Early stages of instability in the big toe and its bones can present as pain and be an important sign of spring ligament failure. At the moment there is no good clinical test for this. A better understanding of big toe instability can lead to earlier detection and treatment. Measuring the degree of movement in the big toe and its bones has been done using a complex test or using a Klaumeter. We have a new clinical test that is painless and does not require machinery. This test is the double dorsiflexion test. We aim to show that this test can be routinely used in the clinical environment and provides information on the stability of the big toe. We also want to show that it is easy to do and reproduce.
