  • Research summary

Type 1 Diabetes occurs when the immune system makes a mistake. It treats the cells in the pancreas which make insulin (Beta cells) as if they were a threat. These important cells are destroyed by immune cells, making it impossible to control blood glucose levels. Most research on autoimmunity and descriptions of Type 1 Diabetes have focused on children of White European descent. Therefore, little is known about the effects of age (adulthood) and ethnicity on the characteristics of Type 1 Diabetes. The limited studies that have been carried out suggest that some people of non-white backgrounds have different symptoms and test results, but this requires more detailed analysis. This is also important because Type 1 Diabetes can be accurately predicted, preventing diagnosis in an emergency. This needs to be accurately detailed for all populations.
