  • Research summary

This study aims to create a new care pathway for patients who have dislocation after hip replacement. We want to help them get the best possible care for dislocation and to improve their recovery. The care pathway will enable patients to receive suitable care for their individual condition, on time, and from the right places.

Hip replacement is a common operation carried out to relieve continuous pain and improve movement. It is a successful operation for many, however, some people experience complications afterwards. One of these complications is hip dislocation, where the hip pops out of the joint causing pain and distress to patients. We want to understand people’s experiences of care for hip dislocation. We will then use the information to try and improve healthcare for patients who have a dislocation after hip replacement.

We will interview some patients who experienced dislocation and some clinicians who care for them. We will ask about their experience with care and treatment to help us understand what the care pathway can include. We will then set up a group meeting called a co-design workshop, with patients, and clinicians. They will work together to design the care pathway. At the end of the study, we will have a care pathway which can be tested to see if it is helpful for patients and clinicians, and can be implemented in practice.

The study result will be written as a PhD project which will be made publicly available in the University of Bristol’s research repository. It will be presented at events/conferences and published as journal articles.
