Research summary
People living with diabetes are required to self-manage their condition through a variety of self-care activities such as eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, taking medication and monitoring their blood glucose levels. Individuals living with Type 2 diabetes who receive support from specialist diabetes teams typically have complex health care needs and multiple chronic conditions for them to self-manage. This requires continuous effort and can be physically, emotionally, intellectually and socially demanding.
Continuous glucose monitors (CGM) have been developed to monitor blood glucose levels continuously, giving people with diabetes real-time readings of their blood glucose levels. It has been shown that using CGM can help some people with diabetes manage their blood glucose levels and improve their quality of life. It is thought that by providing real-time blood glucose readings, CGM can reinforce positive self-care activities, supporting people with diabetes to self-manage their diabetes.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether being able to visualise blood glucose levels using CGM for 12 weeks will help to support people with complex Type 2 diabetes self-manage their diabetes. The study will be a randomised crossover study of 36 weeks duration comparing routine diabetes care plus diabetes self-management education with short term use of CGM (12 weeks) plus diabetes self-management education. Each participant will act as their own control allowing both within group and between group comparisons.REC name
