Research summary
It is increasingly clear that Painful Diabetic Neuropathy (PDN) added on to an already debilitating condition, can further deteriorate the wellbeing, functioning, and outcomes of patients. The main objective of this study is to gather a more in-depth understanding of the experience of pain from the perspective of PDN patients, develop and test an innovative psychological treatment for chronic neuropathic pain in PDN, based upon the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT is a new form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) that has not yet been applied to PDN patients.
The main objectives of this research include:
1) A survey that (a) examines treatment needs, and preferences of PDN patients and (b) assesses the suitability of ACT.2) A small feasibility trial to test the new treatment.
This research aims to produce and preliminarily test, a prototype treatment for PDN. The hypothesis is that ACT will be an appropriate model (based partly on the systematic review) and that the treatment will be feasible and acceptable (based on participants' input and testing in a feasibility trial).
