  • Research summary

Following a burn injury, a patient may encounter a wide variety of issues ranging from physical disability to psychological distress. In a busy outpatient clinic such issues can be difficult for patients to raise and may not be identified during the allotted consultation time. A tool to identify issues important to patients, that can be used during the consultation, will help guide patient-centred care.

The Patient Concerns Inventory (PCI) is patient reported, holistic needs assessment tool that highlights patient’s needs and concerns to a health care professional before their clinic appointments. It has successfully been introduced in a number of clinical specialties including head and neck cancer, breast cancer, neuro-oncology and rheumatology.

The aim of this study is to develop and validate a PCI specifically for burns patients, for use in the outpatient clinic

The list of concerns for the PCI will be developed from a number of sources to improve validity. Initially, content will be extrapolated from existing Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs). Further content will be gained from four focus groups of adult burns patients recruited from the Mersey Burns Unit based at Whiston Hospital. Members of the burn multi-disciplinary team will add further content.

The content will then be refined using an online questionnaire-based consensus, a delphi, process including patients involved in the focus groups and burns specialist health care professionals.

The PCI will be given to 100 patients at the multi-disciplinary burns outpatient clinic at The Mersey Burns Centre. Impact of the PCI on the consultation process will be measured by comparing patient satisfaction between groups and the number of concerns raised in each group.
