  • Research summary

In the UK, day surgery is predominantly delivered in NHS hospitals. About 10 million surgical operations were carried out in 2015/16. Roughly three-quarters of these operations were day surgery, making this an important priority for research.

We want to find out whether the delivery of day surgery in the UK can be improved, and if so, how this could be accomplished, both from the perspective of the patient (the recipient of the service), and those that provide the service (ultimately funded through taxation).

To consider the patient perspective, we will carry out open-questioned patient interviews to answer the question: “what is the experience of undergoing day surgery in a UK public hospital”. We plan to interview 5-10 patients until no new themes emerge. Patients over 18 who have recently undergone day surgery will be recruited from the hospitals where the student investigator works as a consultant anaesthetist.

In a linked study, we will compare a highly-performing and less well-performing hospital day surgery unit using a qualitative case-study approach, with semi-structured interviews of staff (not patients). This study has a separate IRAS application.

Both studies will be submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the student investigator's Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degree at the University of Warwick. The study is expected to be completed by January 2020.
