Research summary
The DALI (Vitamin D And Lifestyle Intervention for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Prevention) study was a randomised controlled trial of different lifestyle and Vitamin D supplementation interventions to prevent gestational diabetes (GDM) across 9 European countries (10 sites). The pilot study showed that a healthy eating intervention during pregnancy was associated with less weight gain and lower fasting glucose concentrations than a physical activity intervention. There were no differences in obstetric outcomes. Further analyses from the main DALI trials are pending. One of the key questions is whether such maternal interventions impact on adiposity in the offspring. DALIFUS is a 5 year follow up study of the DALI participants across the European sites. The follow up will test whether the offspring of the controls have greater ponderal index, and later age for developmental milestones than the offspring of intervention women. The follow up includes maintenance of contact, maternal and paternal (where available) self reported weight and health issues (including pregnancy and medication use) and feeding, growth, developmental and health issues in the offspring. In the UK, 126 women participated in the Cambridge site and over 1000 women participated overall.
