Research summary
This research is a part of a PhD project that explores patient preferences for the use of communication technology (for example, telephone, SKYPE or FaceTime) in orthopaedic physiotherapy and occupational therapy consultations. The first phase (completed) was a systematic review that outlined the work of being a patient when using communication technologies. This phase (phase 2 of 4) explores, through qualitative interviews, how this change in workload of being a patient impacts on their experience. In addition to this, two other stands of inquiry are being included. The first is to explore the burden of having an orthopaedic condition for patients. The second is to focus on the different scenarios these patients would find the use of communication technology acceptable.
Patients who are receiving care at a specialist hospital will be invited to enter the study providing they have experience of a long term musculoskeletal or orthopaedic complaint. Therapists (physiotherapists and occupational therapists) will be invited to give their perspective on the subject. Patients and therapists will be recruited from the outpatient Therapies Department and will be invited to participate in one single interview with the researcher, lasting up to one hour. Interviews will be recorded and transcribed and each patient will have the opportunity to review and amend their transcript prior to data analysis. They will have no further role with the study beyond this point.REC name
