Research summary
Investigating and Improving Nurse-Led Skin Cancer Care
What is this study about?
This study aims to explore how nurses provide skin cancer care across different settings within the British Isles. We will work with nurses, experts, and service users across England to develop an evidence-based model. By understanding what works well and what can be improved, we hope to create a safe, effective, and patient-friendly nurse-led service delivery model for managing skin cancer. How will the study be conducted?
The study will take place in two main phases:National Nurse Survey (Phase 1):
o A questionnaire will be sent to nurses across the British Isles who are involved in skin cancer care.
o It will help us understand current nurse-led models, the training required, and nurses' views on an effective and acceptable model of care.Focus Groups (Phase 2):
o We will hold discussion groups with service users, nurses, and doctors across England, either in person where possible or online.
o These discussions will help shape a practical, safe, and patient-centred nurse-led model for skin cancer care.Who will take part?
• Nurses: Nurses working within skin cancer care across the British Isles.
• Patients: People referred within NHS England for suspected skin cancer regardless of diagnosis.
• Doctors: Doctors that work within the NHS England delivering skin cancer care. Why is this important?
Skin cancer cases are rising, and nurses play a vital role in diagnosis and management. However, there is no standardised model for nurse-led skin cancer services. By gathering insights from nurses, doctors, and patients, this study aims to create an evidence-based approach to improve patient care, increase capacity potentially support rural areas with limited access to dermatologists or regions that rely on digital technology for remote assessments due to a lack of local dermatology services. The study take place from April 2025 to September 2025.
