Research summary
The aim is to investigate whether scanning breast lumpectomy specimens using magnetic resonance can tell whether the cancer has been removed completely or is close to one edge. If the scan is accurate then the scan could be used to allow the surgeon to take more tissue from that margin. Currently, lumpectomy specimens are checked by the pathologist and if disease is close to an edge or margin then the patient has to have another operation.
