Research summary
'The Changing Face of Our Neighbourhoods' has been developed and designed by the Open Doors Neighbourhoods Research Group, which is a group of people living with dementia and carers. The project aims to explore how film can be used to represent the cultural, community and environmental changes within society, through the voices of people living with dementia and carers. This project uses a Participatory Research approach whereby members of Open Doors (referred to as 'co-researchers') are involved in all stages of the project, from conception of the initial project idea to involvement in editing the final films. The co-researchers have been instrumental in developing the protocol.
Co-researchers will have the opportunity to undertake filming via an iPad with a specialist hand-held case, either ‘on location’ or at a local resource centre, whereby co-researchers will sit in front of a green screen with a ‘conversations with’ question and answers style format. The use of a green screen enables archived photographs to be projected as a backdrop to the person on camera and will be added post-production.
Co-researchers are supported by a project team, involving a researcher, the Open Doors group facilitator, a film director/producer and an Outreach Officer from the local museum and art gallery. The films are underpinned by life story and reminiscence. The project has been designed to be inclusive of people who may not have capacity, using flexible ways of working, whilst developing skills and facilitating new learning for people living with dementia and carers.
