  • Research summary

Determining whether squamous cell carcinoma (SCC; a type of lung cancer) of the lung originates in the lung (primary) or has spread from another region of the body (secondary) continues to be a challenge as currently there is no reliable means of testing between these disease states. Determination of this would be beneficial as lung cancer remains to be a leading cause of cancer mortality, and treatment regimes vary between primary and secondary disease. If the SCC type is known then personalised therapy and potentially better patient prognosis may be realised.
This study proposes to use four markers to attempt to discern between such primary lung SCC and SCC which has spread from other regions of the body by identifying marker associated with cell types such other regions. Of these, a marker for High risk Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) will be used due to well known associations with SCC of the cervix, and to investigate a suggested link between HPV and SCC from other areas of the body.
