  • Research summary

The purpose of the study is to assess different treatments for patients suffering with 'irregular heartbeats' or atrial fibrillation (AF): (1) DC cardioversion which involves returning the heart to normal rhythm using an electric shock (2) Pacemaker and AV node ablation which allows a pacemaker to take control of the heartbeat and (3) AF ablation which aims to cure AF by burning tiny areas of the heart responsible for AF. All three options are recognised treatments for AF but it is not known which provides the greatest benefits. We aim to do this by comparing the three treatments head to head.
