Research summary
The project intends to examine how an individual's movement and the structure of their muscles and tendons around the knee changes as a result of a meniscal injury and assess how meniscal surgery, specifically mensical repair, affects functional and structural outcomes post-surgery. We intend to assess participants approximately 1-4 weeks pre-operation/baseline, at four-months post-operation/follow-up and 12-months post-operation/follow-up. By examining participants' movements and the structure of their muscles and tendons around their injured knee, we hope to use these data to develop subject-specific musculoskeletal models of the knee joint and gain a novel and in-depth understanding of how the mechanics of the knee change over time as a result of the meniscal repair. Currently, there is limited scientific literature assessing how the mechanics of the knee joint changes pre- to post-meniscal surgery and how they relate to the risk of a surgery being unsuccessful, which can significantly contribute to the later development of knee osteoarthritis.
