Data collection arrangements
Blood and urine samples (in addition to health information) will be collected from patients with aortic disease and patients without aortic disease (control patients) This will be stored within the bank and used to look at differences between the two groups. Patients undergoing surgery will donate tissue from their aorta to the bank to allow researchers to understand the cause of a range of aortic diseases and work towards new treatments.
Written consent will be taken from all participants before they donate samples to the tissue bank, with the understanding that samples are given as unconditional gifts for cardiovascular research.
Research programme
As we age the aorta (main blood vessel in the body) can become diseased due to fatty deposits (atherosclerosis) or degeneration (aneurysm, dissection). These diseases are complex to treat and pose significant risks to patients. This research tissue bank will allow us to further our understanding of the mechanisms that underlie these diseases and work towards new treatments. The bank fits within a leading cardiovascular research group (the multidisciplinary cardiovascular research centre) at the University of Leeds. It will be used by a range of researchers from vascular surgeons to mechanical engineers working together to try and better understand this important and complex set of diseases.
