Research summary
The aim of this study is to understand how personal beliefs and attitudes may impact on wellbeing and outcomes in Type 2 diabetes with diabetic kidney disease receiving haemodialysis by comparing ethic groups in UK and Nigeria.
This will be a mixed methods study of patients with type 2 diabetes receiving haemodialysis in Leicestershire, UK and at the National Hospital Abuja, Nigeria. A combination of clinical data review, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews will be used to:
• To explore patients’ understanding of their diabetes and its causes
• To explore patients’ beliefs that may modify engagement with advice and treatment for diabetes
• To assess quality of life
• To make comparisons between different ethnic groups
The study will consist of 2 cohorts, 20 participants recruited from the Nephrology Unit of the National Hospital, Abuja, Nigeria; and 30 participants recruited from Department of Nephrology, Leicester General Hospital, UK. Twenty participants will be identified to form the Abuja cohort while the Leicester cohort will comprise 30 participants will be identified from each of 3 different ethnic groups: White, South Asian and Black, making 50 participants in total.REC name
