Research summary
Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS) can be an important tool to allow patients to report their symptoms or other aspects of their health related quality of life. PROMs are in widespread use in clinical practice to help with initial assessment and follow up of treatment. The International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire (ICIQ) modules have separate female and male patient-completed questionnaires available for assessing lower urinary tract symptoms. However, a gender-neutral tool could have advantages for research, as a single tool could be used, which could allow male and female scores to be compared without the need for separate questionnaires. There is also a growing recognition of the need for assessment tools that do not require the disclosure of gender, to ensure healthcare practices are inclusive. A single questionnaire that is not gender specific has been developed by combining the questions from these two questionnaires, the ICIQ-LUTS. This protocol describes the process of testing the questionnaire in clinical practice to understand whether the questionnaire works as as is intended. Statistical techniques on the responses will allow the development of a scoring system for the questionnaire.
