Research summary
For some patients with advanced cancer, medicine given to thin the blood can have some negative effects such as bleeding which can impact upon quality of life and wellbeing. However, stopping medication to thin the blood can increase risk for developing a blood clot and/or stroke. There may come a time for some patients where stopping blood thinning medication becomes an option and they can be involved in a conversation with their doctor about the potential risks and benefits of continuing or stopping blood thinning medication and make a shared decision with their doctor about whether they want to stop or continue.
This study is part of a wider programme of work being done in a number of European countries to develop and evaluate an online decision support tool to help future patients with cancer make choices about continuing or stopping this medicine in partnership with their doctors. The online tool will provide patients with information about continuing or stopping taking blood thinning medication (antithrombotic therapy), what the risks and benefits might be and help them think about what matters most to them in the decision. An initial version of the online tool, which is called CoClarity, has been developed. Alongside the online tool, a training package has being developed for clinicians about using the tool and supporting shared decision-making. This present study aims to find out what patients and clinicians think of the CoClarity tool (patients and clinicians) and training (clinicians only) and how they could be improved. This will help us make changes to them before the final versions are used and evaluated in a large study.REC name
