Research summary
People with a number of diseases and conditions, e.g. neuromuscular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and obesity, on long term ventilation (LTV) in the community are looked after by the LTV Service. This involves patients visiting hospital and nurses visiting patients in their homes. The appropriate use of technology could enhance interaction between patient and the clinical team, improve the information provided to the clinical team enabling patients to be cared for at home and reduce the travel time for both patients and clinicians.
A new system, the Mobile Health Network Data Acquisition Platform (MHN-DAP), has been designed which allows the data from the patient's Nippy 3+ ventilator or Nonin 7500 pulse oximeter (both already part of usual care) to be viewed remotely. The MHN-DAP Bridge device is a small box shaped computer (approx. 11cmx14cmx4cm). It uses special software to collect and securely transmit data about oxygen saturation, blood pressure and ventilator use to a computer at the hospital. It transmits the data wirelessly via the patient's home internet to the clinical team. The MHN-DAP is the monitoring system that will allow the LTV clinical team to assess patients' wellbeing through remotely reviewing data from their home ventilators and pulse oximeters. Additional video-conferencing will also be used to communicate with the patient. The aim of the study is to assess the feasibility of the MHN-DAP with patients with long term ventilation needs. It will assess the efficacy of treatment, the impact on triage of patients in response to unexpected events, and effect on frequency and number of unexpected events. It will also assess the impact on travel both of the clinical team and patient.
