Research summary
Health Coaching is a one to one service developed to support people to make changes to their health behaviours, specifically smoking, alcohol consumption, healthy eating and exercise. Whilst there is evidence supporting the use of Health Coaching to assist in behaviour change, there are logistic difficulties in offering this service to individuals in rural locations. Previous research suggests that delivering interventions over the telephone can address this issue and lead to successful outcomes for people within a wider geographical area. However, it needs to be questioned if developing a telephone service would be acceptable to the clients and staff. This research project will develop a theory-based questionnaire in order to find out if potential clients demonstrate intentions to engage with the service, and also if staff demonstrate intentions to offer and deliver the service. The research would be delivered through "Healthpoint", the NHS Grampian health advice and information service. Healthpoint staff and members of the public who use the Healthpoint service would be invited to participate. Data would be drawn from the Healthpoint online database over a period of six months; short interviews with participants would take place during the space of one week; a paper questionnaire would be developed based upon the previously collected information and would be offered to potential participants for a period of three months. Participants would take part in one section, the interview or the questionnaire, both lasting 10-15 minutes each.
