Research summary
Self monitoring is a key aspect of diabetes management. It encourages patients and their carers to understand how their diabetes is controlled and enables them to make right life style choices as well as identifying and treating hypoglycaemia. A key limitation of current self monitoring of glucose has been the lack of decision making support and to link the results of the monitoring to carers or health care professionals in real time. This limitation is now addressed by new glucose monitoring devices which can connect the patient with their carers or health care professionals and can be particularly useful in older people and in those with chronic complications such as those on dialysis for renal failure. In the proposed 12 week study we will evaluate the relative benefits/added value of using a real time tele glucose monitoring device over conventional glucose testing meters in older adults and with diabetes.
