  • Research summary

The question being addressed is - Teeth and gut are they linked?
It is of relevance as a pilot study to assess whether there is a link between those patients with gastrointestinal disease and those with missing teeth and this may form part of possible further testing in the future for these subgroups of patients.

Any patient attending the Gastrointestinal clinic at Maidstone hospital will be eligible for the study. This will be conducted on the Gastrointestinal clinic at Maidstone hospital ( a secondary care setting).
These patients will undergo a quick oral examination carried out by their doctor at the same time as their review appointment. The doctors will be looking for missing or extra teeth that these patients may have, as well as any other dental anomalies.
The patients will then be asked to fill out a survey asking some questions about their general and dental health.
We believe their may be a link between dental anomalies and gastrointestinal disease.
The study will last approximately 10minutes for the patient and the participants will undergo a questionnaire and an oral examination. The study will end once 200 patients have been recruited.
