  • Research summary

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an illness that makes the lungs clog up with sticky mucus. The treatment takes lots of time and can be unpleasant. When children with CF become teenagers they need to learn to take charge of their treatment. Research shows that this can put strain on parent-child relationships and can make it harder for teenagers to stick to their treatments. A positive parenting program (Teen Triple P) has been shown to help teenagers with other chronic illnesses to adhere to their treatment plans. Parents are given a booklet to work through (one hour a week) which gives skills to help them build positive relationships with their teenagers, increase positive behaviours and manage difficult behaviours. It provides parents with weekly activities to help them to put into practice these skills. Using a case series design, this study aims to see if the Triple P program can help teenagers stick to their CF treatment plans, improve family relationships, and improve parent/child wellbeing. The study will include families of teenagers aged 11-16 who have reported difficulties in sticking to their treatment plans. All families will be recruited from CF teams at North West hospitals. They will be involved in the study for 16-20 weeks. For the first 2-6 weeks families will be asked to complete weekly baseline questionnaires to see how much their children stick to their treatment plans. Parents will then complete the 10 weekly Triple P modules by following the workbook at home and will complete weekly questionnaires. They will then be asked to complete the same questionnaires 1 month after finishing the program to see if any benefits of the programme are continuing. It is hoped that this Triple P program will help teenagers adhere to their treatments and help families to live happier and healthier lives.
