Data collection arrangements
The Twins Early Developmental Study (TEDS) is a longitudinal birth cohort study that recruited >16,000 twin pairs born in England and Wales from 1994-1996, of whom >10,000 families are still actively engaged. The twins have been assessed across cognitive, emotional and behavioural domains from early infancy into adulthood. Genotyping data is available for 10,346 individuals. We now want to link this valuable research data with NHS-held medical records, providing a cost-effective means of new data collection with minimal participant burden. The resultant dataset offers a unique opportunity to build predictive longitudinal, genetic and clinical models of mental health outcomes such as disorder risk and response to treatment. Addressing this as our twins reach their mid-twenties is critical as new mental health conditions peak at this life-stage, and is a priority within the government’s Framework for Mental Health research, deeming the research to be within the public interest.
Research programme
This work is part of a grant award from the Medical Research Council, provided to the Twins Early Developmental Study. This work will allow the exploration of poignant physical and mental health questions within the general community, particularly relevant to those in their mid to late twenties.
