  • Research summary

The aim of this project is to conduct qualitative research to inform modifications to the Teamplay physical activity & screen-viewing parenting intervention so that it is tailored to the clinical and practical needs of children with asthma. The work will involve three stages:
    1) We will conduct interviews with practitioners in primary and secondary care along with members of clinical commissioning groups to: a) gain insight into how children with asthma are currently managed; b) identify opportunities to recruit parents to the programme; and c) identify ways in which the Teamplay programme could be delivered in NHS settings.
    2) We will purposefully sample 6 to 8 year old children with asthma and their parents to: a) explore with their views on their child’s medical needs; b) identify what information and treatment they have received in relation to physical activity; c) identify concerns about physical actvity, screen-viewing and asthma; d) their views on the programme (content, mode and timing of delivery, ongoing support to aid attrition and maintain changes).
    3) The interviews will be transcribed and a thematic analysis will be undertaken to inform the modifiaction of the Teamplay programme so that it applies to this patient group and can be delivered within primary care.
    4) The findings and information used to modify the Teamplay programme will be disseminated - draft manuscripts aimed at publication in relevant academic journals.

We will seek further funding to evaluate the intervention via a feasibility trial.
