Research summary
Why? - In the sporting/musical/aviation world a mental rehearsal / practise prior to performance improves results. We believe that a team mental rehearsal of an operation prior to operating with the will improve the surgical teams performance.
What? - We have devised a surgical mental rehearsal framework for consultant surgeons to lead and perform with their team prior to a simple wrist operation.
Who? - Any patient receiving a Carpal Tunnel Decompression (simple wrist surgery)
Where? – St George’s University Hospital, Day Case Theatre’s
How? - We will film Carpal Tunnel Decompression's as they are currently performed, and then analyse the surgical team's performance. We will then allow the operating team to perform a short Mental preparation (using our framework) prior to performing Carpal Tunnel Decompression surgery. We will then record the surgery again (after our intervention) to allow for analysis of the surgery, and whether there are any differences between the two performances. We will also give the theatre staff 2 questionnaires exploring there perceptions of surgical safety.REC name
