  • Research summary

    Why?

Anxiety affects a quarter of people with stroke and mini-stroke. Psychological support is inadequate due to limited resources. Guided self-help talking therapy, delivered remotely, may be helpful for people with anxiety after stroke. We recently designed and tested a guided self-help therapy called TASK (Treating Anxiety after StroKe).

To improve the design of TASK we aim to develop a chatbot to help anxious patients practice their self-help therapy exercises at home. A chatbot is an interactive computer programme that accepts spoken or typed input and reacts with appropriate spoken or typed output. A chatbot could help anxious patients practice their self-help therapy exercises at home.

    What?

To ensure acceptability and effectiveness, we will consult people who have experienced a stroke or a mini-stroke on the design of the TASK chatbot during face to face interviews.

    Who?

    1) Anyone with a previous diagnosis of a stroke or mini-stroke in NHS Lothian
    2) Able to communicate in English and provide informed consent
    3) Able to travel to the University of Edinburgh for one face-to-face interview
    4) Have access to the Internet

    How?

The face-to-face interview with our student researcher will help us learn about:
    i) The ways people use technology after a stroke or mini-stroke
ii) The chatbot features that would be helpful for people after a stroke or mini-stroke

After the interview, our researchers will design a prototype TASK chatbot for further testing in a follow up study.

    Where?

The interview will take place at the Informatics Forum, University of Edinburgh.
