Research summary
A Programme of education and analysis to research the impact of a motivational and positive thinking programme on the management, Quality of Life and Anxiety and Depression for a group of people diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The central focus of the pathway is a programme in which practical methods, change management and psychological techniques will be used to improve the quality of life for patients while also having a positive impact upon the anxiety and depression associated with having a long term condition. This positive patient pathway goes beyond a structured course and provides information and opportunities for ongoing reinforcement and revisiting of CBT skills whilst addressing some issues of social isolation. Focusing research upon this area would produce relevant and reproducible information that could potentially inform other disease areas. The study will last twelve months and involve a group of approximately 400 COPD patients who are newly diagnosed (within the last twelve months) or frequent users of emergency care. Patients can decline or self select to be in either an active group or a control group. The active group will enter a programme of education over six half-days and followed up at six months. The active group will also have access to an online information system provided by the CCG. Patients in both the active and control group will be asked to complete questionnaires at the start, six weeks and six months. Pre and post intervention data will be collated regarding exacerbations, A&E attendances, admissions to hospital, confidence in managing their condition and inhaler prescriptions as well as data from the St George’s Respiratory Questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaire. A report will be produced for Tameside & Glossop Clinical Commissioning Group and the study will be submitted for publication.
