  • Research summary

Through the delivery of targeted arts and culture interventions to specific communities of Leicester, pilot a 4 year action research programme that focusses on early years children and their families (from currently less engaged demographic groups) in an attempt to understand the interventions needed to increase cultural engagement from the earliest possible age.

Using pre and post test models, the programme will track the cultural engagement of identified participants over the ages of 6 months to 5 years, in order to observe arts and culture engagement change as a result of intervention. A combination of ethnographic, narrative and phenomenological models will be employed as part of the qualitative research e.g. interviews with parents following a delivered programme; and polls, questionnaires and surveys will be utilised as part of the quantitative measurement.
The aim of the study is to explore and understand barriers to cultural engagement from the earliest possible point and the interventions most effective in overcoming them, through a quasi-experimental or experimental model.
The arts and culture delivery programme is integral to the longitudinal gathering of research and contributes to the development of grounded theory as to why engagement patterns change, and the variables than can be identified as factors in that decision or behavioural choice.
The arts and culture delivery will consist of the following:
    * Locally led and shaped programmes suitable for the age ranges of 0-5 - e.g. music workshops, messy play, dance activity, reading and rhyme materials
    * City based activity or high point experiences such as performances in cultural spaces
    * Group activity with other target areas to share or showcase work undertaken
