Research summary
The primary aim of the study is to use a novel method to test fluid from patients' joints, in those patients presenting as emergencies to the hospital with suspected joint infection. This would not include those with joint replacements.
We intend to use excess fluid from samples that are already obtained routinely as part of the normal treatment pathway. We seek to test these samples with a blood gas analyser machine which will provide values for the fluid pH and lactate levels.
We feel that this may allow us to tell whether the joint is infected or not more quickly and accurately in the early phase - thus improving the care provided to the patient and the outcome of treatment.REC name
