  • Research summary

Sleep-Disordered breathing is common in children. Many children with sleep-disordered breathing also have enlargement of the tonsils and adenoids. First-line treatment in the UK is adenotonsillectomy, which widens the upper airway, decreasing the amount of obstruction from soft tissue during sleep. Typically before adenotonsillectomy to treat Sleep-Disordered breathing is performed, it is diagnosed by in-lab sleep studies. These are costly for the NHS, inconvenient for families and may be unrepresentative of what happens in the natural environment. \nDuring clinics, many parents provide videos of their children’s sleep and breathing, captured on their smart phones. This 12 month pilot study will aim to validate an analysis method of these videos which will allow clinicians to better estimate the severity of a child’s sleep-disordered breathing without the need for a sleep study. This could allow clinicians to reduce the number of unnecessary sleep studies or expedite very severe cases.\nSuitable subjects from the St Mary’s Sleep Unit referral population already scheduled to have a sleep study will be invited to participate in the study. We will ask the parent to record a video overnight during their in-lab sleep study, using our instructions. The following two nights the parents will record a similar video of their child’s sleep at home.\nSleep videos will be analysed using a scoring protocol, assessing the presence or absence of sleep-disordered breathing related behaviors. These results will be compared to the sleep study to see if they correlate with its outcome.\n
