Research summary
This research project aims to contribute to reduction of carbon emissions in a hospital trust (the Trust) through examining and changing of everyday working practices with regards to energy and everyday consumables. The trust-wide levels of consumption will be monitored through energy, waste and procurement reports. In addition, patterns and levels of consumption at a departmental level will be studied through observations and interviews with members of staff of selected departments. A social change strategy based on a conceptual framework by Süßbauer and Schäfer (2018) will be developed and implemented with the aim to encourage sustainable consumption practices across different hospital areas. In order to measure long-term implications, the levels of consumption will be monitored for 6 months after the end of the programme. Expected outcomes of the project include reduction in carbon emissions and costs due to increased efficiency in the use of energy and everyday consumables in the Trust. Wider industry implications involve sharing of the experience in implementing social and behaviour change programmes and their role in contributing towards carbon reduction targets in healthcare sector.
