Research summary
The purpose of the study is to build on a survey completed by the Asthma UK (2014), and focuses on examining how individuals with asthma use and perceive personalised asthma action plans (PAAPs) and peak flow (PEF) diaries. Additionally we wish to assess how the level of engagement with these tools and in particular how non-engagement relates to the increased occurrence of asthma attacks. We also wish to explore the common reasons why individuals end up being admitted to hospital, and how this relates to their self-management. Finally we wish to explore the willingness of these individuals to adopt currently available technologies designed to help support their self-management.
We plan to perform a UK wide survey, supported by Asthma (UK) which will be designed to investigate these aspects in more detail.
The aim of this study is to investigate individual perceptions of self-management in individuals with asthma. In order to achieve this we plan to investigate:
1. How individuals with asthma use and interact with their PAAPs and PEF diaries;
2. How the level of engagement with these tools, and in particular how non-engagement, relate to the increases in the occurrence of asthma attacks;
3. The common reasons why individuals are admitted to hospital and how these relate to the individual’s self-management;
4. The general willingness of individuals with asthma to adopt currently available technologies designed to help support their self-management.REC name
