Research summary
Exercise and physical activity are important to help prevent many complications of aging. Haemophilia causes bleeding into joints and muscles and without IV infusion of the missing factors the bleeding risk during activity is high. Haemophilia is divided into 3 severity types,
• Severe: < 1% factor
• Moderate: 1-5%
• Mild: > 5%
The lower the factor levels the more likely the risk of bleeding into joints. Men with haemophilia depending on their severity type are prescribed this missing factor to help prevent bleeding into their joints and muscle ,thus aiming to prevent the destructive arthritis.Until recently this factor was not readily available and many patients suffer with the resultant arthritis caused by bleeding into their joints.
This study aims to evaluate the levels and types of activity men 18 yrs and older undertake and how this differs depending on the severity type of Haemophilia. We will then interview in more depth men with severe Haemophilia to explore further their experiences with activity and their beliefs on exercise. 4 men who are very active and 4 men who are sedentary, to explore both ends of the spectrum.REC name
