Research summary
One of the key recommendations, with high-level evidence, from the new SIGN Guideline on Chronic Pain (SIGN 136)was the benefits of exercise in the management of chronic pain, although many patients attending pain services struggle to increase their physical activity.
The proposed prospective questionnaire survey of approximately 200 adults attending the Lothian Chronic Pain Service (LCPS) will explore their current beliefs about physical activity, their attitudes and perceived barriers to increasing this, and what information and advice they have received from pain services to date. Based on Health Action Process Approach theory, this questionnaire will include validated instruments that focus on perceived risks, outcome expectancies and self-efficacy, with a view to identifying those features that will best inform a behaviour change intervention. Patients will be invited to complete them in the clinic waiting rooms, when they attend their appointment. Data will be entered and analysed on SPSS.REC name
