Research summary
The symptoms and treatment of COVID-19 can affect an individual’s ability to meet their nutritional needs. Older adults with multiple conditions are at greater risk of malnutrition, and it is these individuals who are most at risk of becoming seriously ill from COVID-19 (Abate et al., 2020; Hickson, 2006). When an individual has difficulty meeting their nutritional needs, they are referred to a dietitian. Dietitians have a raft of different interventions available and will tailor the interventions offered to what they feel would be most beneficial to the individual, and in accordance with clinical need.
Whilst some studies have looked at comparison of interventions in different conditions, there is no clear evidence base looking at what patients themselves have found most beneficial, and whether this marries with Dietitians’ perspectives. COVID-19 is a novel disease, and most suitable intervention options are under scrutiny. In conjunction with the individual’s clinical need, understanding from the patient’s perspective what was most beneficial to them can help shape what interventions are suggested in the future.
This study aims to determine which oral-based nutritional interventions are perceived by patients with COVID-19 to be beneficial in their nutritional recovery and whether this matches the perceptions of their dietitian. Patients who have previously been admitted to hospital as a result of their COVID-19 infection and who have received interventions from the dietetic team will be invited to complete a survey. The dietitians will also complete a separate survey, and the results will be compared.REC name
