Research summary
This PhD mixed methods research study is being undertaken through Swansea University and aims to contribute to developing an understanding of what professional judgement means to nurses and how this influences their decision-making. Understanding how professional judgement can be developed to positively influence decision making with workforce management would provide more understanding of the development and training needs of our future workforce and senior nurses of the future. Defining and being able to clearly articulate what professional judgement in practice means will help empower our senior nurses to influence policies and the planning models required to secure our future district nursing workforce.
This research will have four primary aims:
1. Explore the concept of professional judgement as used to determine nurse staffing levels from the perspective of senior nurses - this will include exploring and describing the meaning,
characteristics and value of professional judgement.
2. Explore and understand the factors which influence the development of professional judgement knowledge in district nurses, exploring the skills, knowledge and experience that nurses use when making professional judgements in relation to nurse staffing as well as exploring the implications that this may have on nurse education programmes at both pre and post reg levels
3. Explore the district nurses perspective of how they interpret and apply professional judgements to nurse staffing decisions, considering how professional judgements align to the wider triangulation approach which also includes acuity/dependency and quality indicators.
4. What are the development and training needs of our future workforce and senior nurses of the future in relation to professional judgement and what implications will this have on nurse education programmes (pre and post registration)The research is being undertaken in three phases using a mixed methods approach and will include focus groups, survey/questionnaire and interviews. This ethical application applies to the second phase which will consist of an online survey. A further ethical applications will be made at a later date for phase three (Interviews).
