  • Research summary

The purpose of the study is to optimize a procedure which can be helpful for identifying cochlear implant electrodes which may offer sub-optimal performance. Cochlear implants generate small electrical pulses and these have sufficient voltage to be measurable as a surface potential, and can be recorded using a similar procedure to measuring an EEG. A small number of studies relating to this type of measurement have been published. In addition, the test has already been used with a limited number of cochlear implant users at the University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service.

Cochlear implant (CI) electrodes which are either faulty or in a sub-optimal position (close to the round window or outside the cochlea) may generate a different surface potential from electrodes which are functioning as expected. The purpose of this study is to find optimal stimulation and recording parameters for this measurement for the current devices manufactured by Advanced Bionics and MED-EL. A second aim is to compare potentials for CI users who have a full insertion and all electrodes active with those from CI users who either have a partial insertion or electrodes at the basal end of the cochlea deactivated. For this part of the study, existing data will be reviewed in addition to new data if patients give consent.
