Research summary
Analgesia for upper limb surgery can be provided by supraclavicular brachial plexus nerve block injection(Injection of local anaesthetic around the nerve plexus supplying upper limb above the clavicular bone)under ultrasound guidance. This can be done either by positioning the patient supine(lying on back)or lateral (lying on side).44 patients will be recruited for the study after written consent with discussion of risk and benefits of the procedure and the nerve block will be performed by 22 trainee anaesthetist (each trainee in both positions). The nerve block will be done under ultrasound visualisation of the needle continuously during the procedure. The patient will be administered general anesthesia after the nerve block during the surgery. The ease of performance of block by trainee, needle time and success of block will be measured as primary outcome.
