Research summary
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases diagnosed in childhood and its incidence in Scotland is increasing. Children aged <12years with T1D experience poor blood glucose control which can put them at high risk of complications in adulthood. Amongst this age group, parents assume much responsibility for diabetes management tasks. However, little attention has been given to how parents can be better supported to manage their child's blood glucose control.
This study is part of a project to develop an intervention to help parents optimize their child’s blood glucose control. Phase 1 of the research is underway and comprises a review of previous research investigating parents’ experiences managing their child's diabetes, their need for support and interventions designed to help them. Phase 2, which is described in this application, will comprise a series of consultation groups involving approximately n=40 parents who have a child with T1D (<12years), n=20 health professionals who support them and n=10 key stakeholders, including service users, academics, policy-makers, and experts who input to paediatric diabetes services.
To begin, consultation (discussion) groups involving parents will be convened at each site, with separate groups convened for health professionals and other stakeholders. During these groups, David Rankin, the chief investigator (CI), will present findings from the evidence review. This will be followed by an open discussion to explore parents’/health professionals’ views about the review and parents’ additional needs for support. Findings from these groups will be used to develop an outline intervention. Subsequent groups will involve a mix of parents and health professionals and findings used to refine and modify the intervention and seek agreement for it to be implemented in a feasibility study in a later phase of research.
