  • Research summary

    Why / what
Demands on parents to co-rehabilitate their child with cerebral palsy/hemiparesis are increasing. 110,000 children in England have cerebral palsy. The most common type (hemiparesis) means one side of their body is paralysed or has limitations in movement and function Strong evidence demonstrates improvements can be made to the child’s arm and hand function with highly repetitive practice when the child self-initiates movement. Achieving the required intensity relies on parents co-delivering the routine sessions.

    Research question
Is it feasible to co-design a programme that could be implemented to support parents to co-deliver intensive rehabilitation for children (4 months to 10 years) with or at high risk of hemiplegia/cerebral palsy?

How is it of relevance and importance to patients and public?
Increasingly parents are being relied upon to co-deliver routine clinical sessions with their children This study seeks to understand the impact on parents and co-design a programme to support them.

    Who?
Parents of children age 4 months to 10 years with or at risk of cerebral palsy/hemiparesis, and therapists, who are partnering in the child's routine clinical sessions with the Evelina REACH service.

    Where?
The study will be conducted with the Evelina REACH service, Guys and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (GSTFT). A unique rehabilitation service for children with or at risk of cerebral palsy/hemiparesis who partner in delivery of routine clinical sessions with parents and community therapists .

Study duration and what will the participants undergo?
Study duration, 12 months. Parents and staff will co-design a programme to support parents during their child's rehabilitation. This will involve observations of their child's routine clinical sessions; filmed parent interviews; audio recorded staff interviews; filmed interviews will be analysed, edited for crucial moments and shown to participants for their comments. Events with parents and staff will take place to co-design the programme where analysed data will be presented.
