Research summary
This is a qualitative study looking at how we can best support children and families when an amputation is needed due to cancer. When a child needs an amputation it is a difficult and upsetting time for the child and their family and health care professionals aim to support them through this. It is however difficult to know the best way to support these families. There is very little research looking at this area, partly due to the small number of children this affects. However, whilst the numbers may be small the impact is huge, and as a large specialist hospital more children have amputations here than many other centres in the UK. This study would like to use semi structured interviews to ask parents and young people about their experiences and get their opinions on the best way to support families when they learn about surgery and in the time leading up to the operation. Participants would be parents of a child who had an amputation due to cancer. With parental consent, young people aged 14 or above who have had an amputation due to cancer would also be invited to be interviewed. The study will involve a single on-off interview with participants and the location of this interview will be at the most convenient place for the participant (either at home, the hospital or another convenient location).
