  • Research summary

Dementia is a degenerative neurological disorder which affects an individual's physical and mental health, particularly in the latter stages of the disease. The end stages of the disorder can be distressing both for those who suffer from the condition and those who are indirectly affected, such as carers and family members. An intervention which provides good quality end of life care to those end stage dementia could drastically improve quality of life for those with dementia and those around them.

It is important to understand how different individuals value care. As the National Health Service is funded by taxation, the views of the patients and the general public should be incorporated into decisions in relation to the allocation of resources. The aim of this study is to better understand how those with dementia and their carers value five different care scenarios for supporting their needs. This will be achieved using a willingness to pay (WTP) study which describes different care interventions and asks how much participants would be willing to pay (in the form of extra taxation) to obtain access to the intervention. A greater amount of benefit can be inferred from a larger WTP value, meaning that participants' preferences for each intervention can be quantified.

This WTP study is to be completed by those with mild dementia and carers of those with dementia. This study will be complimented by a general population WTP study (which is not included in this application). These results will be used in a cost benefit analysis, which will able to assess which option would be the best option of care for the NHS and social care services to provide.
