  • Research summary

The objective of this 6 week coaching style group intervention is to provide a safe space for mums to connect with each other and learn from their own experiences, using coaching approaches and tools to support negotiate the enormous transition they experience in having a new baby. The study will evaluate the impact this context has on wellbeing and confidence of new mums, in making decisions for themselves and their baby going forwards. There is much research to suggest that when babies and caregivers form a strong bond early on in the babies’ life, it supports their brain and emotional development throughout their on-going lives.

Eligible women will be over 18 years old, be registered at one of 6 specified GP practices in Southwark, speak English and have had their baby within 8 weeks of commencing the first group session. The groups will be run locally and include between 5-8 postnatal women. Each session will last for 90 minutes facilitated by Midwife and Coach, Rachel Erasmus.

Each session will be semi structured and facilitated by Rachel Erasmus (Midwife and Life Coach). We will be sharing our experiences and using coaching tools and approaches to explore women’s day to day experience as a parent of a new baby. The focus of these groups will not be on education or how to deal with issues such as feeding or sleeping. Instead, it will focus on women’s experiences, emotions and goals, using coaching tools and approaches.

Women will be asked to fill in questionnaires at the start and the end of the course. There will also be 1 follow up telephone call lasting 30 minutes, 2 months after completion of the 6 week course.

The study will commence in June 2015 and complete in February 2016

This study is funded by Guy’s and St Thomas’ (GSTT) Charity.
