Research summary
To investigate whether a 6-week supervised hospital-based exercise program has significant improvements on pain and dysfunction in comparison to a non-supervised home exercise program.
Subjects will be recruited from the NHS via GP referral into Halton Physiotherapy Outpatients Department. Subjects will be posted an information leaflet about the trial and invited to attend a 1:1 physiotherapy assessment.
After initial assessment eligible subjects will be randomly allocated into 1 of 3 groups; Control (Advice on knee osteoarthritis and 6-week follow up ), Supervised Exercise (12 sessions of physiotherapy led supervised exercise) and Non-Supervised (one off demonstration and provision of home exercise program).
The Knee Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) will be used at initial and 6 week follow-up to determine treatment effect.
Results from this study are of particular interest to both patients and healthcare providers, as regular hospital visits for supervised sessions increase healthcare expenditure and exposes the patient to an elevated risk of hospital-acquired infection.REC name
