Research summary
There is emerging evidence suggesting sleep disturbances may be associated with the development of dementia. Sleep is a modifiable behaviour, therefore it is an important potential target for intervention for cognitive decline and dementia. Better identifying individuals who are at risk of developing dementia and who could benefit from potential preventive therapies in order to delay the disease onset and slow its progression is a worldwide objective. Sleep fragmentation, abnormal sleep duration, and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea could be modifiable risk factors of particular interest. The Sunrise device has been selected for this study to capture sleep behaviour as this is an easy and reliable method to find undiagnosed sleep apnoea.
For this study we will invite participants already participating in the PREVENT Dementia Programme (https://preventdementia.co.uk/) to examine sleep quality and sleep behaviours. Participants will be invited to wear a sleep sensor whilst sleeping and then upload the data collected via the sunrise app. Alongside this they will be required to complete some basic questionnaires about sleep and provide information such as alcohol consumption and current medication use.
