Research summary
Mental health service' main aim is to aid service users in their recovery from their mental health difficulties. One way to do this is enabling them to take ownership and control of their basic physiological needs, in this case sleep and activity. By addressing them, it provides stability for service users to be challenged when addressing their more complex psychological needs (Maslow, 1941; Deckers & Lambert, 2018).
This study will be investigating activity trackers as a feasible alternative to psychoeducation in improving service users' sleep and activity. This study will specifically be exploring the impact of working on sleep and activity on various mental health symptoms: including anxiety, depression and mood; as well as perceived quality of life, sleep, activity, and recovery.
This research will be a randomised control trial, taking place over 10 weeks – a 6 week intervention period and a follow-up study 4 weeks after intervention ends. Participants will be service users meeting the criteria to be part of the West London NHS Trust’s Ealing Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team and will be randomly allocated to one of three conditions: Psychoeducation and Activity Tracker group (consisting of 6 weekly psychoeducation sessions and the use of an activity tracker throughout the 6 weeks to monitor sleep and physical activity), Activity Tracker only group (the use of the activity tracker without psychoeducation for 6 weeks) and Treatment as Usual group (no psychoeducation or use of an activity tracker for 6 weeks).
