Research summary
HIV-positive patients are at increased risk of developing skin cancers compared to the general population. As HIV-positive patients are living much longer, the impact of skin cancer on the future health of these individuals is not fully understood. The Sun and Health Behaviours Study will explore skin cancer associated risk-behaviours among HIV-positive individuals attending for care at a London HIV clinic (Mortimer Market Centre). We will recruit HIV-positive men and women over the age of 18 with skin photo-type I – III. We will administer self-completed paper questionnaires to participants and collect data from clinical databases. This study may help guide health campaigns and highlight the need for education about the increased risk of skin cancer and the need for adherence with photo-protection measures for HIV-positive patients.
